Startup investors in Vancouver
The angel networks, tax-credit funds, seed funds and programs that take applications from founders in Vancouver and the rest of BC, what each publishes about itself, and how to reach it.
Who invests in startups in Vancouver?
Vancouver founders can pitch to two organized angel communities, VANTEC Angel Network and Angel Forum, and approach BC tax-credit funds such as WUTIF Capital and eFund that invest only in BC companies. Panache Ventures has a Vancouver office, and Creative Destruction Lab runs a Vancouver site. Most of these groups invest only in companies based in British Columbia.
BC gives angel investors a provincial tax credit. Investors in a company registered as an eligible business corporation can claim 30% of their investment as a BC tax credit.
Angel networks in Vancouver
Both of Vancouver's angel communities screen companies, coach them, and put them in front of accredited investors at regular events. Members then decide individually. Both charge founders a fee to present once selected.
| Network | How it works | Who it looks for | Fees | How to apply |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VANTEC Angel Network | Running since 1999. Pitch events on the first Wednesday of each month (except August), in person, with networking before and after. Selected founders get mandatory 1-on-1 pitch practice and workshops on their numbers and data room. | BC-headquartered tech founders. A 2.5-minute pitch for those raising $250,000 to $500,000 with early customer signals and something to demo. A 5-minute pitch for those raising $500,000 to $1.5 million who also have a full-time team, an incorporated company and real-world validation such as pilots or beta users. | $199 to pitch, charged after selection | Application form on its Apply to Pitch page |
| Angel Forum | An angel community founded in 1997. The team reviews applications for fit; companies are picked 2 to 3 weeks before each Angel Forum or Summit and get coaching before they present. | Tech startups seeking funding in western Canada | A presentation fee after you accept an invitation; amount not published | Online application (Dealum) on its Apply to Present page |
Funds that invest in Vancouver startups
Two of the funds below are BC venture capital corporations, which means their own investors get the BC tax credit and they invest only in BC companies.
| Fund | Stage | Published terms | Focus and eligibility | How to reach it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| WUTIF Capital | First outside round, after friends and family | Typically $50,000 to $300,000, averaging about $150,000; usually 10% to 20% of a round of around $1 million | BC technology companies raising under $1 million at a valuation under about $4 million; co-invests with angels | No founder application on its site; VANTEC's site points BC founders raising an angel or seed round to it |
| eFund | Not stated | Not published. 96 investments in 49 companies since 2011 | BC-based companies with unique technology, validated product-market fit, a scalable model and a strong team | Contact form on its site |
| Panache Ventures | Pre-seed | Up to $1.5 million, from a $100 million fund | Technology founders in any sector; office in Vancouver | Deck submission form |
How does the BC venture capital tax credit work?
Investors who buy shares in a company registered as an eligible business corporation (EBC) can claim a 30% BC tax credit. Individuals can claim up to $300,000 in credits a year for investments made from March 4, 2025, up from $120,000 before. Corporations have no annual limit.
For founders, registering as an EBC can make a round more attractive to BC angels. Investors are told to ask the company for its pre-approved authorization to raise tax-credit-supported investment, so plan the registration before you start pitching. The Government of British Columbia's tax credit page explains the rules.
Programs that put founders in front of investors
- Creative Destruction Lab, Vancouver. A non-profit program for science- and technology-based ventures. CDL charges no fees and takes no equity; mentors may invest separately. Check its site for the current intake.
Which route fits your company?
| If your situation is… | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| BC-based, raising $250,000 to $500,000, with early customer signals and a demo | VANTEC 2.5-minute pitch | Its published track for that stage |
| Incorporated, full-time team, raising $500,000 to $1.5 million with pilots or beta users | VANTEC 5-minute pitch | Its published track for that stage |
| A tech startup anywhere in western Canada | Angel Forum | It recruits from across western Canada |
| BC tech company raising its first outside round under $1 million | WUTIF Capital | Its stated target |
| BC company with validated product-market fit | eFund | Its stated criteria |
Meeting an organization's criteria means you can apply, not that it will invest.
Sort out the tax credit before you pitch.
BC investors can only claim the 30% credit if your company is a registered eligible business corporation, so registration is part of round preparation, not an afterthought.
What should you have ready before you apply?
- Your raise amount and traction, to pick the right VANTEC track.
- A data room: VANTEC coaches selected founders on preparing one.
- Eligible business corporation registration, if you want BC investors to get the tax credit.
For how to run the raise itself, see how to raise a seed round. For Vancouver's wider startup scene, see the Vancouver and Victoria startup guide.
