The job

What Does a Startup CEO Actually Do?

A startup CEO has three jobs that never go away: set the direction, build the team, and make sure the company doesn’t run out of money. Everything else changes with stage. Most CEO struggles come from doing the last stage’s job for too long.

What does a startup CEO do?

Sets the direction: what the company is building, for whom, and what it will say no to. Builds the team: hires, keeps and develops the people who do the work. Keeps cash in the bank: watches burn and runway and raises money before it is needed. At the start the CEO also sells, recruits and often builds the product; over time those jobs move to others. Selling first is covered in founder-led sales.

Founder rule

Do this stage’s job, not the last one’s.

The skills that got the company to here are rarely the ones that get it to the next stage. Notice when your job has changed.

What should a CEO do this week?

  1. Write the company’s one priority for this quarter.
  2. Check cash, burn and runway.
  3. Talk to at least two customers.
  4. Decide one thing you will stop doing yourself.
  5. Tell the team what you decided and why.

Cash first: cash, burn and runway.
