Pre-Seed Pitch Deck: Validation Over Forecasts
At pre-seed, nobody expects mature SaaS metrics, and pretending to have them hurts you. Investors look for a sharp insight, founder-market fit and evidence that a specific customer will change behaviour, give access or pay.
What should a pre-seed pitch deck include?
A pre-seed deck uses the same story as a seed deck, with validation in place of traction: the problem and your insight into it, why your team can win, the evidence that customers want it, the first segment you will win, and what this round will prove. The slide order on the pitch deck template still works; swap the traction slide for a validation slide.
What replaces the traction slide?
What counts as validation before revenue?
| Evidence | How strong | What makes it stronger |
|---|---|---|
| Customer interviews | Useful, weak on its own | A repeated pain in the customer’s own words, with costs |
| Design partners | Medium | They use it weekly and give time without being chased |
| Letters of intent | Medium | Signed by a budget holder, with a price and start date |
| Paid pilots | Strong | A clear path from pilot to annual contract |
| Pre-sales or deposits | Strongest | Money paid before the product is finished |
How to read these signals is covered in validation signals and pre-selling SaaS.
Should a pre-seed round use a SAFE?
Most pre-seed rounds use a SAFE, a simple agreement for future equity that converts at the next priced round. Y Combinator’s SAFE documents include post-money SAFEs for US companies and a version for companies formed in Canada, Cayman and Singapore. Get a startup lawyer to review terms before you sign. The broader process is on how to raise a seed round.
At pre-seed, behaviour is your traction.
Show what customers did: used it, signed, paid. Opinions and forecasts carry little weight.
What should the pre-seed round prove?
Plan the round around what a seed investor will need to see: paying customers, a first channel that works and early signs that customers stay. Write those as milestones on the ask slide, and make the team slide show why you can reach them. When you have revenue, move to the traction slide formats.
Frequently asked questions
What should a pre-seed pitch deck include?
Problem and insight, founder-market fit, validation evidence, the first wedge and the milestones the round will reach.
What traction do you need for pre-seed?
Not revenue necessarily. Design partners using the product, letters of intent, paid pilots or pre-sales all count.
How is a pre-seed deck different from a seed deck?
It replaces revenue metrics with validation and leans harder on the team’s insight and fit.
Should I include financial projections at pre-seed?
Keep them out of the main deck or very simple. Show the milestones and budget the round covers instead.
What is a SAFE?
A simple agreement for future equity: investors get shares later, usually when you raise a priced round.
Can Canadian startups use a SAFE?
Yes. Y Combinator publishes a version for companies formed in Canada. Have a lawyer review it.
How many slides should a pre-seed deck have?
Around 10 to 12. The same core structure, shorter, with validation in place of traction.
